Na Na pinches her pennies (aka frugal living)

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

Fake eggs

I watched a news report a few days ago about a group of scientists who have found a substitute for an egg.  An EGG!  So what’s wrong with using the real thing?  Here is one link to read more about the fake eggs.  Or do a search for lots of reports.  Evidently several billionaires like fake eggs enough to invest in them.  Bill Gates is one of the investors.

The scientists are using different plant materials which they have altered chemically and genetically to make the fake eggs.  What’s next?  Fake chickens to lay the fake eggs?  Those fake eggs can be used to make  mayonnaise, or in baking cookies,  or as scrambled, or several other forms of industrial cooking.  Heck, I bet Mickie D’s is already testing a market for the fake eggs.  Hmm…. Fake eggs and fake oil to create fake mayonnaise that can be used to make other fake foods.  Geeze!

I don’t know about you but I’m very tired of being a test subject for fake foods.  Seeing that news report only adds to my confusion.  Why is there such a need for all the fake foods?  We are a nation that throws away perfectly good veggies and fruit because it has a blemish.  So why are so many of our foods fake foods instead of real foods?  Why is so many of the foods we eat every day fake? What am I missing here???  If we are getting the fake stuff, who is getting the real?

There are so many fake foods these days it’s really hard to tell what the real stuff is.  Chicken nuggets that are actually made from chicken skins.  Cheese puffs that are not cheese but corn.  Milk cream that is not cream but an oil derivative. Milk made from grain or nuts.  Lard that isn’t really lard.  Sugar that isn’t sugar but a chemical our bodies can’t absorb so it is peed out and ends up inside fish in the ocean.  So much of our food is not real food which means our children and grand children wouldn’t know the real taste because they’ve never tasted it.  No wonder so many kids have allergies.

We are mindless sheeple eating whatever food is put before us.  It doesn’t matter if it’s actually poison to our bodies so long as it pleases our taste buds on the way down.  Why?  Why are we so willing to accept fake foods when there is so much land available for growing food?  Why are there no organizations promoting the backyard farmlet?  Where are the organizations promoting “grow your own” at the same places so many people are picking up second harvest or dare to care foods?
