Na Na pinches her pennies (aka frugal living)

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

Juice jello

No one wanted the commodity apple-cranberry juice I was giving away so I decided to make juice jello.  The juice is rather tart which is why no one wanted it.  Basically you can make juice jello out of any juice you want.  Even tomato juice or carrot juice.  All you need is a juice and unflavored gelatin.

Food and kitchen 2015 007Unflavored gelatin is used one packet per one cup of liquid.  I had a container that held 4 cups so I used four packets.  Put one cup of juice in a container.  Put three cups juice in a sauce pan.

Food and kitchen 2015 008In the container add the four packets of gelatin and stir just enough to get the gelatin wet.  Let it set.

Food and kitchen 2015 009As the gelatin dissolves it will absorb the liquid and become thick and cloudy.  Like this.

Food and kitchen 2015 011Now heat up the juice that is in the sauce pan.  Don’t boil.  When you see the first bubble start to form the juice is hot enough.

Food and kitchen 2015 013Now mix the hot juice into the gelatin and stir until it become clear. This only takes a minute.

Food and kitchen 2015 015That’s it.  Done.  Put into the fridge until it gets cold and firm.  You have juice jello.  Ok, the cranberry part of this juice is quite tart.  I added just a small bit of sugar to take away that tartness.
