Na Na pinches her pennies (aka frugal living)

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

Food bank food

The mobile food bank items from this week.

  • Bananas – as many as we wanted.  I took about 15.
  • Food and kitchen 2015 07510 lbs potatoes – gave away
  • 4 lbs carrots – gave away
  • Food and kitchen 2015 0803 lbs onions – gave away
  • 4 little yogurt cups – put into freezer for Ladybug
  • 4 summer squash – gave away

Food and kitchen 2015 078CANNED, MEAT, AND OTHER STUFF:

  • 2 1/2 lb pork roast – freezer
  • 3 pk egg salad – gave away
  • 2 cranberry sauce – pantry
  • 1 vegetable soup – gave away
  • 1 beef stew – gave away
  • 1 orange juice – pantry for now
  • 2 quarts buttermilk – freezer
  • 2 rolls bounty paper towels – pantry

Its very unusual to get anything non-edible like paper towels.  I don’t buy them myself because they are too expensive.  We do get a paper item about once a year.  Last year about this time we got puffs tissues.

There are times when I would love to see practical items like dish liquid or laundry soap given away but that will never happen. The mobile food bank is a “food” give away of less than ideal foods instead of tossing into a landfill.  I’m thankful for whatever we get.

So now I need to go work with those bananas.
