Na Na pinches her pennies (aka frugal living)

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

Fake ham spread

This is a very old recipe from WW2.  You make it with bologna or hot dogs instead of actual ham.  Many households back then used spam to make this spread.  If spam was not available then bologna or hot dogs would do.  Grandma Mama called it deviled ham.  I think it was because she used leftover deviled eggs in her recipe. This spread was one way of stretching the meat rations as well as using leftovers.  Its really good on crackers.

To make this you need bologna or hot dogs or both.  Or you could use a can of spam like in the older times.  You need cheese, mayo, and pickle relish to make the simplest version of this spread. I’m using bologna and cheese I got in a food bank box a few weeks back.

I chopped the bologna into smaller pieces then grated the cheese so its smaller.  Makes it easier for my food processor to handle.

I put these into my food processor along with some of the relish and mayo.  Grandma Mama would have used one of her hand cranked grinders to blend it all together into a sort of chunky paste.

Whir it around until everything is nice and smooth.  Now you have a basic version of fake ham spread.  To add more flavor I’ll add some onion and boiled eggs.  I might even sneak in a veggie or two when Ladybug isn’t looking.  To make your own version simply add any flavor or spices you prefer.
