Na Na pinches her pennies

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

Testing a boring video

I watched the national news for the first time in about a month.  I had no idea the flooding was so bad in Nebraska.  It looked like the whole state was under water.  My heart goes out to the people who have lost their homes and jobs.  The poor animals too.

Ladybug was visiting me this weekend.  She was helping me figure out the making of videos and getting them onto youtube.  The only way to test and discover the way things work is to do them.  Eckster had given me her older model Sony Sure Shot camera.  Its very similar to my old Sony that my grandson Spanky had demolished.  That meant very little learning curve to use it.

I needed to know how long the camera memory could record.  I also needed something to record.  I set the camera on the counter by the stove and pointed it at me while I was washing dishes.  I found out my camera will record 22 minutes with this 512 MB memory stick before the warning beep says recording has stopped.

Next thing I needed to know was how much time it takes to upload to my computer.  Discovered it takes only a few seconds to go from camera to computer but then the video hides itself.  I couldn’t find it on my computer.  Where the heck did it go?  I have no problem finding photos but the videos aren’t where I expect them to be.  Well I guess the computer wants to play a game of hide and seek with me.  It took quite awhile for me to locate because it doesn’t go to the same storage file as my old camera did.  Something to do with the camera app not being the same.  There aren’t any thumbnails either to know which video is which.  The thumbnails that are visible are just photos.  But I did figure out how to rename the video after I figure out which one is which.

I had just taken a shower and washed my hair before starting the dishes.  I was letting it dry before putting it up in a top knot.  I always have plenty of dishes to wash.  Ladybug eats constantly and is skinny while I eat very little and stay fat.  I’m embarrassed to show it but over the last few months I’ve gained back all 80 pounds I had lost.  I’m starting all over again like from the beginning.

After I gained a good understanding of getting the videos onto my computer I needed to know the amount of time it would take to put the video onto my youtube channel.  I’m surprised it takes only a few seconds to upload from my computer to my youtube channel.  I’ve learned a lot but there is so much more to learn.  I’m limited on what I’m able to do with videos.  For example I don’t have any editing capabilities.  Or at least none that I’ve found.  I can’t edit anything out and I can’t speed it up either.  Each video is a one time and done or delete.

Hi Anita! I have been thinking how great it would be if you had a YouTube channel for a long time. Your frugal ideas and your stories are the stuff people like me need to see, not people complaining of having to skip Starbucks one day a week because the Hubby was putting his foot down.
You are a true pioneer! I hope you think on it and are able to work out the details!
I check in with you every so often when I don’t fall asleep after dinner. I am 67+ and working 3 jobs to try to help my disabled son. I know how hard things can be.

I’ve wanted to do one for many years. I think probably ever since youtube was born. I have many excuses for not getting started but excuses don’t get anything done. 😦 Mostly its been frustrating learning new tech stuff. If someone needs to know how to save money I can help but when it comes to tech stuff I’m a klutz. Thankfully youtube has been making things easier to navigate and learn. I’m not real good at the videos yet. I think I make my point though.

At your age you should not have to find it necessary to work three jobs. Our economy is all wrong.

In watching you wash dishes, I saw you have very long hair. How long since it has been cut? When I retired in Nov. of 2015, I decided to let my hair grow. The game plan was to cut it and donate to Locks of Love, something I have done twice before. With summer coming, it might be time to call the beautician, lol!

The last time my hair was cut I was 17 years old. I made a death bed promise to never cut it again. A couple years ago my hair was thick and went all the way to the floor. The doctor put me on two medications called Zetia and Trajenta. Both have health warnings that they should not be used by patients over 60 and I didn’t know that. I lost a lot of my hair and had extreme itching all over. The new doctor tried to put me back on them again but I refused. He tried to say my hair loss and itching was probably the soap I was using. Really? You are the doctor and you don’t know the health warnings of the medications you prescribe? Needless to say I’ve got a newer doctor. I’ll be seeing her in a few days.

Yes, it’s bad here in Nebraska. There are 79,000 miles of streams & rivers in the state & now almost all of them are flooding. Those that aren’t are in the western part of the state where they got a foot to two feet snow and very high winds. Now that it’s getting warmer the snow melt from that part of the state will be coming down the Niobrara & the Platte…more flooding. The town where I live is OK. We’re several miles from the nearest river. Our flooding was caused by rain, rapid snow melt and frozen ground so nowhere for the water to go. Here it was mostly a little water running into the basements. The rural county roads are a mess….roads washed out, bridges & culverts washed out, water over roads. The Elkhorn & Niobrara rivers flooded big time. The ice broke up so that was in the rushing water. A dam & levees ripped out. I haven’t seen this much water all over since the big flood of 1957 when I was just a little kid.

I saw more of the national news yesterday. Gosh Linda, it looked like the whole state of Nebraska was under water and they said more rain was on the way. Even those who live far from the river can be affected when the roads are not usable. I saw some towns were getting food and supplies delivered by planes and helicopters because the county roads were either washed out or under water. I hope you have enough supplies to last until the trucks can deliver to stores again.

Hi Margie, yes the recipes look interesting. Thank you for thinking of me. I wish it didn’t have so many ads popping up when I’m reading.

Yes, I am a clean freak for sure. I get sick so easily and so often that when I am feeling well I do my best to keep the germs away.
