Na Na pinches her pennies

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

More denture adventures

Almost two years ago, July & August 2019, I had gone to the dental school and a dentist office for estimates on getting surgery and snap in dentures made. The cost was going to be a wide range of between $12,000 and $18,000. I had actually tried to do a gofundme for the money I needed which turned into a disaster. I did raise, I think about $800 dollars, but due to a misunderstanding and feeling horrible about it I had gofundme refund all the donations. I decided to save the money myself a little at a time rather than go through that again.

Afterwards I started a special savings for just my dentures. Actually it was just a jar for any change left after paying cash when I bought something. All last year I never went inside a store so there was no change to put into my jar.

I finally felt safe enough to visit another dentist for another estimate after getting my covid vaccines last month. Of course; I do know I can’t afford them, but heck it costs nothing to ask questions and keep up with potential costs. My appointment was yesterday, May 13th. The estimate for both upper and lower was about $10,000. I asked for an estimate of getting just the upper plate for now and the bottom plate later. I was quoted $6,500 for just the upper on six snaps.

She explained that in two visits I’d have my teeth. The deformity in my mouth won’t be a problem because the dentures only cover the gums not the roof of my mouth. She explained the first visit would be to make an impression of my mouth and would take about 30 minutes. The second visit would be to have the implants inserted and teeth immediately put in which would take about one to 1 1/2 hours. Wow, what a salary dentists earn. There would be no need for someone to take me home because it would be local anesthetic. I’d go home with teeth. I can start eating right after the numbness wears off. A third visit would be to check the healing and make any adjustments needed.

I do have a problem though. She doesn’t make partials like I need for the lower teeth. I’d have to go to another dentist for that after getting the upper snap ins. I don’t think dentists like working together. Before I have any dental work done I need to be assured I can get both the upper and lower plates made and matching up properly. Right now I’m doubtful I’ll ever get dentures but I’ll keep investigating possibilities to keep hope alive.

Truthfully, the cost might as well be a million dollars because its beyond my budget. BUT, an old lady can dream can’t she? I dream of eating raw vegetables and fruits again instead of boiling them to mushy or making them into baby food smoothies. Ooo, carrots and celery sticks. Lettuce, cucumbers, and apples. To be able to bite a tomato instead of smashing it with my gums or cutting it with a knife. Who knows, I might even try out the whole foods plant based diet craze to lose weight.

I dream of smiling again. I dream of being able to eat in public without embarrassment. I dream of speaking properly. Before I lost my teeth I had no idea how much of speech is connected to having teeth. Its been years since I actually smiled. My granddaughter flower asks me everytime she sees me if I’ve grown my new teeth yet. She believes my teeth will grow back like hers are doing. What a surprise it would be for her to see me with a mouth full of teeth. I could tell her that old people teeth grow really really fast.

I’m also a Capricorn. The goat believes in climbing mountains one step at a time. No matter how difficult the journey we eventually reach the goal. So, in conclusion, it may take me a few years but I *will* get my teeth someday. Alright, time for me to do more STUFF purging and preparing for quilting again.

Hugs to everyone!

That’s crazy expensive. It shouldn’t be that way. I hope maybe you can find a charity to help you.

I’ve tried. There are no charities for that kind of expense.

Start encouraging your oldest grandchild to become a dentist. It is a great career.
