Na Na pinches her pennies

Shh… don't tell anyone I'm poor. They all think I'm living frugal and green just like everyone these days. This is a blog about a senior citizen living a frugal life, on a fixed income, in a low income food desert, and passing along knowledge from lessons learned. Some she learned from her Grandma Mama many years ago and some learned only a few days ago.

Toilet sink – not yet

Anyone who has been reading my blog for awhile may remember how passionate I am about water conservation at home. I rarely let water go down the drain that hasn’t been used more than once. I saw my first toilet sink several years ago while watching youtube videos about Japan’s water conservation techniques and inventions. I loved the idea! How clever of the Japanese to invent it. I’ve wanted one ever since. What a toilet sink does is let the water be used twice. First time is to wash hands and the second time is to flush.

When my name finally came to the top of the city’s home repair waiting list I was given a brand new duel flush toilet to replace the old broken toilet. Yippie! My first thought was that with a working toilet I could finally have a toilet sink. Oh wow, a toilet sink combined with a water saving duel flush toilet was very exciting to me so I bought one from sinktwice.com. It was the only company I could find selling sinks to fit the Glacier Bay duel flush toilets like mine. I loved the story about the start of this family owned business.

My intention was to install it myself soon after the brand new toilet was installed. However; I hadn’t considered I’d be off my feet and sick in bed for a few days. Well I decided today was the day to put in my new toilet sink because I was already working in the bathroom putting a new hose on my shower. The old one had split and sprayed water everywhere. I can finally put away the portable shower and use the regular shower with hot water from the new water heater. That’s luxury.

After getting the new shower hose put in, and there were no leaks, it was time to install the toilet sink. I took it out of the box and decided to go for it. Hmm, the instructions were not for a duel flush toilet sink but a regular one. Well maybe I can make it work anyway. I removed the toilet lid and lay the sink on top for a dry fit. Oh bummer, the toilet sink is too big for the new toilet. The area where the water goes down into the tank hangs over the edge. Water might spill out onto the floor. I can’t have that.

So after reading the instructions a couple of times I called the helpline and talked to a very nice person named Culver about returning it for an exchange. He suggested instead of me paying the postage to send the whole thing back that instead he send me just the sink part to fit my toilet and I can use the same inside parts which will fit the replacement. So now I just wait for the new sink to arrive and I’ll call him if I have any problems installing it on the toilet. He also told me to be careful of the type soap I use because it could damage the actual toilet parts. I’ll need a brand called Method Sea Mineral soap. I believe Kroger and Walmart sells it.

I’m still waiting for the furnace to be installed. The nights have been getting pretty chilly but my small space heaters help. Yet another appointment has been set to take measurements. It’s going to be on Monday. I won’t hold my breath on that. I’m hoping the delivery won’t take very long so it can be installed before the really cold weather arrives. I have other little odd jobs to be done around the house today so I’ll get busy with them now.

Thank a veteran for their sacrifice and service. Pray for peace around the world.

I’ve never heard of a toilet sink. I just wash my hands in a bowl then use the water to flush the toilet as long as its only pee.

Your idea of using hand washing water to flush is a good one. The sink works to wash hands when you actually do flush the toilet. The water filling the tank is diverted to the sink so you can wash hands and then it returns to fill the tank.

This is off the toilet sink subject.
When I looked up your address to send you an item, I saw your house looks very similar to the others in your neighborhood. Looked like same floorplan, all white houses, etc. I wondered about that similarity. Are all the houses the same on your block? Did the people that owned that big factory building behind you plan this community? (I’m not cyberstalking. Foolish me did not know your address was on the Tip Jar tab.)

Thanks for asking. I like telling the story behind my house and this subdivision. I think it’s interesting.

The man who originally built these houses actually built major size buildings like high rise hotels and large hospitals. He built the warehouses to store his building materials until needed. Trains brought the materials and stopped at the warehouse to unload.

My house was originally the secretary’s house given to her so she would not need to travel very far to unlock the warehouse for the trains to be unloaded. Originally there were stairs and a gate along the warehouse wall for her to quickly go unlock the doors. When the secretary’s husband passed she eventually retired and moved away. That’s when this house became a rental house.

When this subdivision was built the city of Shively was changing from a farming area to family owned houses. The man owned all the unused farm land around the warehouse so he decided to divide it up to make money building and selling houses. The man was really good at major projects but not so good at family houses. He chose one basic design and let the buyers choose an inside layout and type of siding.

Only one house is different. The original house burned down years ago. Last year the lot was sold and a one story two bedroom house was built to house immigrants awaiting their green card hearings. There are several (6 or 7) immigrant houses in our block owned by absentee landlords.

Over the years few changes have been made to the houses. Some added porches and some added decks but the basic design remains the same. My house was the last one still owned by the builder’s family and was being used as a rental house. This information was told to me by his daughter who I bought my house from. Interesting story isn’t it?

My question about this is, the water in the toilet is cold, right? Isn’t it more hygienic to wash your hands with hot water?

Great question. It made me wonder about that too so I did some checking. I found a study done by the food science department at Rutgers University. According to their study the temperature of the water used for washing hands doesn’t matter. Lathering for at least ten seconds is what removes germs from hands. Also because there is a few feet of water pipes inside my house the water in the pipe becomes warmer. The water filling the tank would not be really cold for several seconds. There would be plenty of time to wash hands before the tank is filled. It’s the same idea behind letting cold water run until it gets colder for a drink of water.

I loved your last post, Anita….so upbeat, encouraging and matter-of-fact about food NONwaste. Bravo‼️
I have a suggestion – it appears to me that Amazon has the hand soap you need for your toilet sink. Might you put that on your Wish List with Amazon? Just a thought….
Glad you are feeling better and I am praying your furnace gets installed SOON! Conni

Thank you Conni. I’ll try to do more non-food waste posts. I took your suggestion and put the soap on my Amazon wish list. I have a dispenser so I put just the refill on the list but I’ve been wondering if other brands of plant based biodegradable soaps would work too. Such as Mrs. Meyers or 7th generation or Dr. Bronner’s. I’ll have to ask and do some research.
